Interview with H.E. Mr. Leonard Senza Menezi, High Commissioner of Malawi to India

Your Excellency, how would you assess the current state of Malawi-India bilateral relations, and which areas have seen the most significant progress in recent years?

Malawi-India bilateral relations have always been very good right from the time the two countries attained their Independence. The current visit of Her Excellency President Murmu and the signing of the four Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) have strengthened the bilateral relations. The MoUs were signed in the areas of: Arts &Culture; Youth Matters; Sports and Pharmaceutical cooperation. The signed MoUs will promote trade and tourism between the people of the two countries.

Malawi will be celebrating its 61st Independence Day on July 6, 2025. How does the High Commission plan to commemorate this important milestone in India?

Malawi this year is not celebrating its National Day here in India. However, we always appreciate the good will messages that various partners send us.

What investment opportunities does Malawi offer to Indian businesses, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, mining, healthcare and renewable energy?

There is vast potential across the sectors including: agriculture and Agro-processing; Tourism; Mining; Manufacturing; Energy and Infrastructure development. Agriculture-related investment opportunities abound in large-scale farming, agro-processing, agriculture financing services, agriculture infrastructure development including irrigation and technology advancement.

Energy Industry is another crucial sector as it supports other industries for sustainable economic growth and development. Malawi government is inviting Indian investors to invest in the following areas: Hydro generation, solar energy, wind energy, thermal power plant, biomass stoves and biogas and RPG.

Malawi’s healthcare sector presents significant investment opportunities, particularly in medical equipment and diagnostics, expanding access to healthcare services, and Public-Private Partnerships (PPP).

There are also various investment opportunities in Mining Industry, which include extraction and processing of valuable minerals such as gold, Uranium, PGMs, Base metals, Nickel, Copper, and Rutile.

 Could you highlight some of the top tourist destinations in Malawi and why Indian travellers should consider visiting your beautiful country?

Malawi offers a diverse range of tourist destinations, from the stunning Lake Malawi to its wildlife reserves and cultural attractions. Some of the top tourist destinations in Malawi include Lake Malawi, Majete Wildlife Reserve, Nyika National Park, Liwonde National Park, and Mount Mulanje.

Indians should consider visiting Malawi to experience fresh water and crystal clear waters of Lake Malawi and breath-taking of Mount Mulanje whilst enjoying great hospitality of Malawians in a peaceful and democratic country.

 Cultural ties form an essential bridge between nations. How do you see Malawi-India cultural relations evolving, and are there any new initiatives to enhance people to people contact?

There is good cultural relation between Malawi and India to the extent that the two countries are working together to enhance people to people contact through various programmes which foster on mutual understanding and appreciation of each others’ cultural expressions. This is done through exchange visits where artistic show casings such as fine/craft exbitions and cultural performances are held in each other’s territory.

 Have there been any recent high-level visits of official exchanges between Malawi and India that have strengthened the partnership?

The recent visit of the President of India, Her Excellency Droupadi Murmu to Malawi, is the most memorable visit that has demonstrated the strong ties of partnership that exists between the two great nations. This is besides several cabinet Ministers from Malawi that have visited India on several official duties.

What kind of visa facilities and ease-of-travel provisions does Malawi offer to Indian businessmen and tourists?

Malawi is a democratic country and big on hospitality. It welcomes visitors across the world with a big smile, that’s why it is called “The warm heart of Africa”. Visa acquisition is very easy. You simply apply online and the visa will be ready in few days.

India and Malawi have long cooperated in the agricultural sector. Could you tell us about the current projects or collaborations underway in this area?

Malawi imports a lot of farm inputs and machinery from India. The Indian government assists Malawi with Line of Credits for infrastructure developments which include construction and installation of irrigation facilities to promote agriculture production.

Currently, there is an agreement between the Indian government and the Malawi government for Malawian traders to export to India cereals and legumes.

Education is another important pillar of our cooperation. How is Malawi benefiting from India’s support in higher education, vocational training, or capacity building programs?

Malawi has benefited a lot from India through the ITEC programme where the Government of India has provided scholarships to over 3000 Malawians have been trained in various Universities in India in various courses such as ICT, Agriculture and obtained degrees both at undergraduate and graduate levels.

Some Malawians on their own also come to study bin India in different Private Universities. Thousands have been graduating in Law, Economics, Pharmacy and Laboratory, Business and Commerce etc. India has indeed enhanced the capacity of many Malawians to become a country with well-trained human resource.
