Unifarma has established itself in Latvia’s competitive pharmaceutical landscape. Walk us through the journey of founding the company, its core mission, and how it has evolved over the years to meet changing healthcare demands?
Unifarma was founded with the objective to improve access to high- quality pharmaceutical products in Latvia while serving as a reliable link between international manufacturers and the local healthcare system. In its early years, the company focused on building a strong and compliant distribution network, establishing trust with both suppliers and healthcare providers in a highly regulated and competitive environment.
From the outset, our mission has been centred on accessibility, reliability, and long-term partnerships. Rather than operating purely as a distributor, Unifarma has positioned itself as a strategic partner, supporting international companies in entering and navigating the European market, while ensuring that patients and healthcare institutions have consistent access to safe and effective medicines.
Over time, the company has evolved in line with changing healthcare needs and market dynamics. As demand increased for more specialised and cost-effective treatments, we expanded our capabilities beyond distribution into areas such as regulatory support, product registration, tender participation, and tailored market access solutions. This has allowed us to remain competitive while contributing to broader healthcare priorities, including affordability and supply continuity.
As the pharmaceutical sector has become increasingly global, we have also strengthened our international partnerships by connecting high- quality manufacturing capabilities from abroad with the stringent regulatory framework of the European Union. At the same time, we have deepened our expertise in compliance, quality assurance, and pharmacovigilance to meet evolving regulatory standards.
Today, Unifarma operates as an integrated pharmaceutical partner, combining strong local knowledge in the Baltic region with an international outlook. Our development reflects a consistent commitment to adapting to healthcare demands while maintaining our core focus on quality, reliability, and long-term value creation.
As the owner of Unifarma, what are your long-term plans for innovation and expansion in pharmaceuticals and healthcare?
When I think about the long-term direction of Unifarma, I see it as a gradual evolution from a strong regional distributor into a more integrated pharmaceutical and healthcare partner.
Innovation for us is not just about new products, it’s about improving how medicines reach patients. We are focusing on making our supply chain more efficient, more transparent, and increasingly data driven. This includes investing in digital tools, strengthening our regulatory and pharmacovigilance capabilities, and ensuring that we can respond quickly to changing market needs.
In terms of expansion, we are looking both geographically and in terms of our portfolio. The Baltic region remains our core, but we see opportunities to strengthen our presence across neighbouring markets. At the same time, we are expanding into more specialized segments of pharmaceuticals, including higher-value and more complex products, where reliability and expertise are critical.
Ultimately, our goal is to build a company that is not only commercially successful but also contributes meaningfully to the healthcare ecosystem.
Could you elaborate on the range of products and services offered by Unifarma? What distinguishes your offerings in terms of quality, affordability, or innovation within the Latvian and broader European markets?
Unifarma today offers a broad and integrated range of products and services that go well beyond traditional pharmaceutical distribution. On the product side, our portfolio includes prescription and over-the-counter medicines, medical devices, food and health supplements, as well as cosmetics and related healthcare products.
This diversity allows us to serve multiple channels, from hospitals and pharmacies to retail and wellness markets.
However, what truly distinguishes Unifarma is not only what we distribute, but how we support our partners across the entire pharmaceutical value chain.
We provide end-to-end services, including GMP and GDP- compliant warehousing and logistics, cold chain management, and pan-European distribution. In addition, we offer highly specialized capabilities such as batch testing and release under Qualified Person supervision, regulatory affairs support—from dossier preparation to marketing authorisation—and full pharmacovigilance systems across multiple European markets.
We also support manufacturers with serialization, product registration, private label development, and contract manufacturing, enabling them to enter and scale within the European market efficiently.
What differentiates us in terms of quality is our strict adherence to European regulatory standards, including GMP and GDP certifications, and our ability to maintain full compliance across all stages, from importation to final distribution.
Given your Indian roots and the collaboration between India and Latvia in the pharmaceutical sector, could you please elaborate?
My roots have naturally shaped the way I see collaboration between India and Latvia, particularly in the pharmaceutical sector. India is a global leader in the production of high-quality, cost-effective medicines, while Latvia offers a strong regulatory environment and serves as an important gateway to the European market.
Through Unifarma, we have been able to connect these two ecosystems, bringing reliable manufacturing capabilities from India into a highly regulated European framework, while ensuring full compliance with EU standards. This creates value not only for the business, but also for healthcare systems and patients.
I believe there is significant potential to further strengthen this partnership. By deepening cooperation in areas such as generics, regulatory expertise, and supply chain integration, India and Latvia can complement each other very effectively and contribute to more accessible and efficient healthcare across Europe.
