New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, with discussions covering India-Iran bilateral relations, developments in West Asia and cooperation in multilateral forums.
The meeting was the second interaction between the two leaders in less than two weeks, following their earlier meeting on August 31 on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek. President Pezeshkian’s visit also marked his first visit to India.
Focus on India-Iran Relations
During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi and President Pezeshkian reviewed various aspects of the bilateral relationship. Modi thanked Iran for its continued high-level participation in BRICS-related meetings, particularly amid challenging regional circumstances.
The Prime Minister highlighted the potential of BRICS to promote resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability among countries of the Global South. He also thanked President Pezeshkian for participating in the Leaders’ Session of the BRICS Business Forum.
West Asia Situation Discussed
A key part of the conversation focused on recent developments in West Asia. Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s position that outstanding issues should be addressed through dialogue and diplomacy.
He also stressed the importance of continued efforts towards lasting peace and stability in the region, while underlining the need to safeguard freedom of navigation and commerce and ensure the safety and well-being of seafarers.
The emphasis on maritime security comes amid continuing regional tensions and concerns over disruptions to commercial shipping and international trade routes.
Cooperation Through BRICS
The two leaders also discussed cooperation on issues of mutual interest in multilateral organisations, including BRICS. Their meeting took place during India’s hosting of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, where discussions also addressed broader issues concerning global governance, economic cooperation and the Global South.
The meeting underlined the continuing engagement between India and Iran at both bilateral and multilateral levels, particularly as the two countries navigate developments affecting regional stability, connectivity and international commerce.
