Interview with Mr. D.S. Rana, Chairman & Managing Director, Engineering Projects (India) Limited, (A Govt. of India Enterprise)

Please tell us about Engineering Projects (India) Ltd. How is it contributing to the development of the nation?

EPI is a Government of India company under the aegis of Ministry of Heavy Industries. EPI was incorporated in 1970 as a construction company to render services in Project Management Consultancy (PMC) and turnkey construction to accelerate the pace of industrial infrastructure and construction activities going on across India. Since then, EPI has performed its assigned roles as the country’s leading Prime Contracting Company and has left its imprint not only in India but in overseas market as well. EPI has executed over 620 multidisciplinary projects in India valuing over Rs.120,000 million and contributed immensely in socio-economic development of the Nation by creating a robust, resilient and sustainable infrastructure.

From your experience in the Indian Railway and the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India, what have you gained that you wish to implement in the Engineering Projects (India) Ltd.? What is your vision?

The clock-work precision with which every O&M or in-situ project related activity is performed in Railways is so phenomenal that overtime this continued adherence to delivery within the specified timelines develops a very unique skills set, which are now being replicated in EPIL. On the other hand, Dedicated Freight Corridor Project, one of the biggest ever green field infra initiatives in Rail Sector, posed altogether different challenges in terms of Land Acquisition on pan-India basis, string of regulatory & environmental clearances and raising of large financial resources from International agencies like World Bank and JICA . In the context of EPIL, the key take-away is to increase the average size of project manifold to bring economies of scale.

EPI has the rare distinction of having worked for almost all Power utilities and Steel Plants both in the Public Sector as well as in the Private Sector. Please tell us more about the same.
