New Delhi: India shares close, warm and friendly relations with Suriname which are cemented by the Indian Diaspora. PIOs constitute approximately 37% of the Suriname’s population. Suriname has been celebrating 145th years of their arrival in Suriname. A number of agreements and MoUs in the areas of Health & Medicine, elections, information technology, collaboration between the diplomatic institutions of India and Suriname, Ayurveda and traditional medicines and employment of dependents of the diplomatic staff of both the countries are scheduled to be signed during the visit.
Suriname is a founding member of the International Solar Alliance. Developmental assistance is being offered to Suriname for the solar power related projects. Lines of Credit for power transmission & infrastructure and maintenance of Chetak Helicopters which Suriname purchased in 2015 are being offered.
India will assist Suriname to establish a Centre of Excellence in Information Technology. An MoU to take forward this project has been signed. Besides, the two sides have also concluded four MoUs in the fields of elections, diplomatic academies partnership, employment for spouse of diplomats of the two countries and archives.
