South Asian Giant, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, gives 500,000 dosages of Hydroxychloroquine to Ecuador.
Last August, the Government of India donated 500,000 dosages of hydroxychloroquine to Ecuador. The donated medicines have reached Ecuador and handed over to the three beneficiary institutions: the Ministry of Public Health of Ecuador, the Association of the Rheumatology of Ecuador, and the Patients Foundation of Ecuador.
Even though, the use and the effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine for the treatment of patients diagnosed with COVID-19 is still a matter of debate, still, this drug is widely used as an effective treatment for certain autoimmune pathologies. The donated medicines will be distributed to patients suffering from lupus and other autoimmune diseases.
The donation of the medicines was processed by the Ecuadorian Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the support of the Ecuadorian Embassy in New Delhi. The transportation of the donation from India and Colombia to Ecuador was coordinated and financed by the CRISFE Foundation and the Government of India.
This donation of hydroxychloroquine is not exclusive and exceptional. In 2016, the Government of India and Cipla, the renowned Indian pharmaceutical company had also made a generous donation of 16.5 tons of medicines and medical supplies for the victims of the earthquake that had severely struck the provinces of Manabi and Esmeraldas in April 2016.
Today, owing to its undisputed world leadership in the production of generic medicines, India has earned the nickname of the pharmacy of the developing world; nonetheless, it is worth mentioning that the generic drugs manufactured in India are including not limited to benefit the developing countries. According to recent data, the United States of America imports 40% of generic drugs from India. Overall, India boasts of the maximum number of FDA approvals for new generic drugs. India is a supplier of high quality and affordable medicines.
New donations of medicines and medical supplies from the Government of India are expected to arrive in our country in the coming weeks.
