New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. The meeting focused on strengthening the India-Egypt strategic partnership and expanding cooperation across key sectors.
India-Egypt Strategic Partnership
The meeting came as India and Egypt continue to deepen their relationship following the elevation of bilateral ties to a strategic partnership in 2023. President El-Sisi emphasised the importance of taking concrete steps to further strengthen the partnership.
Prime Minister Modi welcomed Egypt’s active participation in the BRICS Summit and discussed opportunities to build further momentum in bilateral relations.
Trade and Investment Cooperation
A major focus of the discussions was economic cooperation and investment. President El-Sisi highlighted Egypt’s strategic location, skilled workforce and extensive free-trade network as opportunities for greater Indian investment.
The two sides discussed increasing bilateral trade towards a $12 billion target, along with expanding Indian investment in Egypt. Key sectors identified included manufacturing, technology, clean energy and the automotive industry.
Prime Minister Modi also reaffirmed India’s interest in encouraging Indian companies to expand their presence in the Egyptian market.

Egypt’s Role in BRICS
Egypt became a full member of BRICS in January 2024, along with Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. President El-Sisi’s participation in the 18th BRICS Summit reflected Egypt’s growing engagement with the grouping and its economic and diplomatic agenda.
The 2026 summit, hosted by India in New Delhi, brought together BRICS leaders amid discussions on economic cooperation and broader global issues.
Strengthening India-Egypt Relations
The Modi-El-Sisi meeting highlighted the expanding scope of India-Egypt cooperation, particularly in trade, investment, technology, clean energy and manufacturing.
With both countries seeking greater economic engagement, the discussions at the BRICS Summit provided another platform to advance bilateral cooperation and strengthen the strategic partnership between India and Egypt.
