Foreign Secretary of India, Shri Vikram Misri, successfully concluded his two-day official visit to Nepal from 4–5 November 2026, at the invitation of Nepal’s Foreign Secretary, Mr. Amrit Bahadur Rai. The visit focused on strengthening the longstanding partnership between the two neighbouring countries and advancing cooperation across key bilateral, regional and emerging areas of mutual interest.
During the visit, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri called on the Right Honourable Prime Minister of Nepal, Mr. Balendra Shah, and conveyed warm greetings from Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The discussions reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation and explored possible initiatives and outcomes in preparation for Prime Minister Shah’s upcoming visit to India. The engagement reflected both countries’ commitment to maintaining regular high-level diplomatic exchanges and strengthening their multifaceted relationship.
Foreign Secretary Misri also held meetings with Nepal’s Finance Minister, Hon. Swarnim Wagle; Foreign Minister, Hon. Shishir Khanal; Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Hon. Biraj Bhakta Shrestha; and Minister for Infrastructure Development, Hon. Sunil Lamsal. On 4 November, he held delegation-level discussions with his Nepali counterpart, Mr. Amrit Bahadur Rai, reviewing ongoing cooperation and identifying opportunities to further deepen the mutually beneficial India–Nepal partnership.
An important dimension of the visit was the growing cooperation in trade and commerce, development partnership, hydropower, physical connectivity, border management, energy and people-to-people relations. Nepali leadership also expressed appreciation for India’s swift and substantial humanitarian and technical assistance following the devastating Rasuwa-Bhotekoshi floods, highlighting India’s continued support as a trusted development and humanitarian partner.
Beyond traditional areas of cooperation, both sides recognised emerging opportunities in start-ups, digital connectivity, artificial intelligence (AI) and sports. Foreign Secretary Misri also interacted with members of the Nepal–India Parliamentary Friendship Group and Nepal’s Parliamentary Committee on International Relations and Tourism, emphasising the importance of parliamentary engagement in strengthening bilateral understanding and cooperation.
The visit marks another important step in advancing India–Nepal relations, which are rooted in shared history, geographical proximity, cultural connections and longstanding people-to-people ties. With Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s anticipated visit to India, the latest diplomatic engagement is expected to provide further momentum to bilateral cooperation and open new avenues for collaboration, connectivity and regional partnership.
India and Nepal continue to build on their historic friendship, working towards a stronger, more connected and mutually beneficial future.
